New version 2.14 of plugin Googlemaps is released today. Now Google Maps API version 3 is default so no key is needed. Have a look at the examples: http://tech.reumer.net/Google-Maps/Demo-Google-Maps-V3/.
Not all features are possible yet with Google Maps version 3. See examples what features are available.

* Solved bug with automatic update. From this version it should work allright in Joomla 1.6/1.7. If you have a previous version 2.13a/b/c the upgrade will not work.
